KNOX MUSIC INSTITUTE

If you’re looking to host an event in a modern space that also boasts its colorful history, the Knox Music Institute is a match for you. Located on the second floor of the Miller Theater, the KMI Loft has modern conveniences such as dynamic lighting and custom sound and projection capabilities as well as the original walls and beams from former tenants such as Cullum’s Department Store.

The KMI Loft is an indoor space with a private entrance that can be accessed via elevator or stairs. The space is approximately 1,300 square feet and features tall ceilings and lots of natural light. This space is perfect for company meetings, holiday parties, private events before a Miller Theater performance, and more.

The Knox Music Institute is phase two of the rebirth of the Miller Theater, which reopened in January 2018 following a $23 million capital campaign. The project, led by 2KM Architects, Inc. and R.D. Brown Construction, involved removing the second floor ceiling to create a lofty two-story performance hall. The Knox Music Institute was part of the original vision of the Augusta Symphony board and major donors, who desired the Miller’s neighboring structure (formerly, Cullum’s Department Store, among other uses) to serve as a space for education and outreach.

The Institute is housed in two floors over the Miller Theater Box Office and serves as a small performance and lecture hall for the Augusta Symphony as well as a rentable venue and office space for the Miller Theater. It will also be the home of the Symphony’s Community Chords Music Therapy program, which launched in the fall of 2019.

COMMUNITY CHORDS MUSIC THERAPY

In year one, Community Chords Music Therapy will provide services to approximately 50 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities by partnering with four CSRA organizations to provide free group music therapy at the Knox Music Institute to their beneficiaries. Group sessions target clinical goals such as socialization, communication, self-expression, motor function, cognitive stimulation, and mood. Additionally, these groups provide opportunities to work on goals of community integration and functional independence as beneficiaries venture to the Knox Music Institute each week to attend music therapy. In subsequent years with appropriate funding, Community Chords Music Therapy hopes to expand the program to include more beneficiaries for marginalized groups in this community-based model.

Critical to the Community Chords group music therapy program is the desire to make it free of charge to participants and organizations. While physical, occupational, and speech are often covered by medical insurance, music therapy is much less likely to be covered. The Symphony and Community Chords will work and advocate for these services to remain free and are thankful to donors who financially support this program.
